Ice-cream

As a child, there was no greater joy than an unexpected trip to the ice-cream store. The only event bigger than that, was if we went to an amusement park, where we rode all the rides and then got cotton candy and ice-cream.

Now all grown up and unable to have those silly quirks. I don't visit amusement parks as frequently as I want to, this visit ranks right up there. Hell, it is even fighting for the top spot.

A visit to the ice-cream factory.

A moment at a traffic light

The car stopped for just a moment, we waited for the light to change from red to green. I looked out the window. Saw people walking, children crying, incandescent hoardings, bored drivers waiting, watching.

Common Grackles

Common Grackles
Unbeknownst to all of us, they watched, from their box seats and sounded their disapproval.

Indian street food

There is something about street food. A quick snack with just the right touch of stark flavours. The playful yet powerful burst of flavours is not easy to achieve. Which is why not everyone can perfect the craft.

After trying dozens of Chaat places in Houston, I present you with a winner.

Bansuri on Wilcrest Dr
Bansuri Indian Food Corner. Situated in a nondescript strip mall, this food truck serves not more than ten items, is open only between 6:00 - 9:00 in the evening, Mon-Sat and is always packed with patrons waiting for their orders. Try it, you won't be disappointed.

Crisscross

Houston is different things to different people. Some see it as home, some may be just passing through and some may find it so comfortable, they may never want to leave. Whichever group you fit into, whatever you take away from here, you can't miss this.

Beltway 8 intersection

I don't think it is pretty, I don't hate it. But it never fails to amaze me.

A light lunch

Bowl Cafe on Richmond

For all those people who like a light lunch, a salad or a sandwich. Freshly made, not reheated. Served with a smile but not with useless banter. A place to eat while checking emails but not a place for office gossip. A place you can slip into without driving for miles, but not a place everyone frequents. Half the fun comes from choosing what you want from a long list of ingredients.

Bowl, a place that is all that.

Via Colori

Via Colori - Nov 20, 2010

In the heart of downtown, a day filled with colours and fun. A constrained display of talent as much for fun as it was for charity. I took a walk with friends and took in the hues and sights. This is one of my favourite pictures of the day.

A file cabinet, if you will

Living in a city does not make it home. Learning its nuances gets you a step closer. Feeling what it's feeling probably clinches the deal.
                                    - Said by me

Ask anyone about Houston and you will always hear about its expanse. How big it is, how everything is bigger in Texas and how diverse it is. But therein lies the challenge.

Chuckles and I have been going about discovering Houston very differently. He likes the nature parks, the arboretum, long walks, the cars. I like witnessing the different cultural activities, the various communities, the warm summer months, the McMansions, just driving around.

So from this day forward, this blog will honour that and give the many pictures a space - to rest, to go back and rediscover and when we leave this country, this will serve as a reminder to everything we experienced. Be prepared to find restaurants, reviews, happenings, quaint observations, glance and be missed moments and anything else in the next few years that catches our fancy.

Hop on board and good luck!
